A total of 122 properties surrounding West Jefferson Lake have petitioned for their inclusion in a sewer pipe that will run alongside the lake, and to the City of Cleveland’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. Plans surrounding the sewage pipe began in 2015 when CRWP approached the Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners asking it to sponsor the project. Since then, County Commissioners and community members alike have worked together to bring the project to fruition. The project was listed outside the fundable range for a Point Source Implementation Grant (PSIG) in 2017, but with hopes of being a certified project by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) this spring, funding will hopefully be awarded in 2018.
Currently, West Jefferson is waiting to see what happens at the State Legislature this session. Funding for PSIG is part of the bonding bill. These programs traditionally enjoy bipartisan support because they provide both environmental benefits and economic development in the form of large construction projects, but there is always some uncertainty when it comes to how the legislature will agree on a bonding bill.
